USAFS General Hoyt S. Vandenberg
The USAFS Hoyt S. Vandenberg is soon to become an artificial reef near the port at Key West, FL. The 520 foot ARIS ship will be sunk 130 feet below the surface about seven miles South of Key West. The group, Artificial Reefs of the Keys, has been working about 10 years, raising $2.9 million and obtaining permission to sink the Vandenberg. Project organizer, Capt. Joe Weatherby, said " We are not just dropping the ship. We are placing it precisely. We are launching this ship on its final duty as an underwater classroom, underwater laboratory and recreation destination".
UPDATE: The VANDENBERG sank on May 27, 2009. Visitors Welcome.
